Research, Advocacy

Research
We conduct and produce leading research across the variety of areas in which we work. Our research allows us to gain a greater understanding of a broad range of development issues. The findings are used to refine our activities, reinforce our campaigns, inform our publications and help us strategise for the future.

We use our research to build demonstrable models and spread methods of best practice. Our advocacy activities promote these models to encourage communities and other organisations to use them.

Advocacy & Campaigning
Our advocacy and campaigns work is carried out to ensure that our vision is promoted so that the masses can have a voice to present a united front and so that we can exert legitimate pressure on the government. Our objective is to act as a well-informed intermediary between the powerful and the poor to ensure that promises are delivered, to push for accountability, transparency and sustainability.

We also aim to bring issues at the grassroots level to a wider audience using the media, networks, state platforms and other advocacy channels to do this. To ensure that our advocacy and campaigning work is well-informed and appropriate, we use the information and experience gained from the implementation and development of our grassroots activities, as well as our social and scientific research.

We Aim To :
  • Promote and improve effective governance at various levels.
  • Influence improvements to policies, laws and guidelines.
  • Monitor and analyse key government programmes and governance mechanisms, and make appropriate advocacy interventions when necessary.
  • Support and facilitate information sharing, learning and policy developments with CBOs, NGOs, networks and consortiums.
  • Support or facilitate appropriate judicial/legal interventions to ensure where necessary.
  • Disseminate our analysis and learning, through our publications and website.
  • Engage with government, PRIs, polity, bureaucracy and the media.
  • Engage with UN organisations, and large aid organisations who provide grants and loans to government and key private sector players.
Recent Successes :
  • To promote the effective implementation of the FRA, a mass rally was organised in Chandrapur, Rayagada, followed by a submission of memorandums to the Tahasildar.
  • Regional consultations have been held on on biodiversity conservation and bioresource governance, mining and industrialisation issues and the Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Bill.
  • We contributed to the draft of the Integrated Water Resources Management Policy which is being put together by the Government of Odisha.
  • We were selected to represent civil society in a consultation on ‘The impact of drought and flood in the water sector, Orissa’.
  • The Government of Odisha requested RCDC to give its opinion on the Draft Climate Change Action Plan in a consultation.
Networking
By joining and building up networks, we are able to gain and share knowledge and work together with others in the sector to achieve goals. RCDC has a wealth of resources, including research data and field expertise, on a broad spectrum of topics that we share with others to spread awareness and understanding. We use our networks to make stakeholders aware of provisions, issues and challenges of legislation, such as the Forest Rights Act, so as to facilitate their proper implementation.

Besides a number of informal networks and partnerships, recently we have acted as a member of several formal and prestigious networks, such as the NTFP Exchange Programme South Asia, IUFRO, FECOFUN, GACF and PACS.

Consultancy Services
We are lucky to have an organisation made up sector experts with a wealth of information between them. Indeed, at RCDC we have around two decades worth of learning and resources available. In order to share this expertise, we offer consultancy services for INGOs, NGOs and other organisations.

Our consultancy team can offer guidance on our thematic areas. They are also able to offer help with baseline surveys, Monitoring & Evaluation systems, supply chain analysis, impact assessments and capturing models of best practice – among other things. For example, we conducted a supply chain analysis and process documentation exercise for a PRADAN-implemented dairy project in Rajasthan.

If you are interested in collaborating with us on any research, advocacy, networking or consultancy work we would be happy to hear from you. Contact us.
